What is The Challenge?
Every year, FLL works with experts in the field to create a Challenge that relates to a significant real-world issue.
- Two-part Challenge
- The Project
- Robot Game
- Core Values
Last years Challenge – Body Forward
This years Challenge – Food Factor
In the 2011 Food Factor Challenge we will explore the topic of food safety and examine the possible points of contamination our food encounters – from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsterile processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and storage – then find ways to prevent or combat these contaminates. In the Food Factor Challenge, teams will build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT to solve a set of Food Safety missions as well as research, develop, and share their innovative food safety solutions. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s signature set of Core Values.
What is the Project?
In the Project
- Teams research a real-world problem in the field of the Challenge theme
- Create an innovative solution
- Share their findings in their community
- FLL is not just about building and competing with robots. FLL encourages well-rounded teams because any successful engineering project requires a wide variety of skills
- Through the project research, teams learn more about the science behind the Challenge theme and better understand the work of professionals in that field
- Identify a Problem
- Think About It
- Create an Innovative Solution
What is the Robot Game?
In the Robot Game
- Two-part Challenge
- Teams design, build, program, and test autonomous robots, using Lego MindStorm Kits, that must perform a series of tasks, or missions
- Within a 2-1/2 minute time limit. The game and its missions often symbolize solutions to some of problems presented in the Challenge theme.
- The field is made up of 14 field pieces
