Mission Statement:
The mission of Shrewsbury Robotics is to provide students in the Shrewsbury Public School system an opportunity to develop real world expertise in a fun, competitive atmosphere. We cultivate teamwork, creativity and problem solving skills, while teaching basic engineering concepts. We believe that every student is capable of becoming an outstanding member of the community, and our goal is to bring out those abilities in each person that participates in our program. The success of this program comes from: the strong bond between industry and education, the strong bond between student and mentor, and the strong bond between Shrewsbury Robotics and the community.
Program Summary:
Shrewsbury Robotics is made up of three distinct branches: The Shrewsbury High School FIRST Robotics Competition program, The Oak and Sherwood Middle School FIRST LEGO League Program and the Summer Robotics and Science Camp. All programs fall under the leadership of the Shrewsbury Robotics Steering Committee. The high school FIRST robotics competition team is also led by an engineering committee, and a group of student leaders. The middle school FIRST LEGO League program is run by adult mentors and high school student mentors from the high school program. The summer program is run by a similar group of mentors.
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 467, The Shrewsbury Colonials:
This program is open to any High School student living within the town of Shrewsbury who is in good academic standing with their school. The team competes in the annual FIRST Robotics competition, an international high school competition. The team is led by student leaders, industry engineers, parents, and community members. An engineering committee consisting of mentors and engineering sub-team student leaders direct the creation of the robot throughout the build season. After the robot is complete, the team travels to two regional competitions; these usually occur in March and early April. During the year, the team participates in many team building, and community building events.
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Competition Teams of the Shrewsbury Middle Schools:
This program is open to any middle school aged student living within the town of Shrewsbury who is in good academic standing with their school. The FLL program runs from September, when the annual challenge is announced, until December when the state competition is held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The teams will attend two regional competitions; both are opportunities to qualify for the state competition. Each team creates a research presentation along with creating a robot to perform the challenge. The FLL program is led by adult community members and members of the FIRST Robotics Competition team. Each individual team is led by an elected middle school team member who is a veteran member of the FLL program
The Robotics and Engineering Summer Camp:
This program is open to all local students from 3rd grade to 9th grade. There are four one week sessions. Each week, students will build and program their robot to compete in the previous year’s FLL challenge. Along with the robots, students will have the chance to variety of projects depending on the week. The students are mentored by select high school team members and select middle school team members. The program is run by adult community members.
